28.02.2011: Shri S.C.Misra to hold additional
charge of CMD BSNL:
Consequent to retirement of Shri Gopal Das, Shri S.C.Misra, Member (S), DoT will
hold additional charge of CMD BSNL till appointment of a regular incumbent or
till futher orders, in pursuance of a DoT order.

28.02.2011: Highlights of Union Budget:
Personal income tax exemption limit for individual tax payers raised to Rs 1.8
lakh from Rs 1.6 lakh. Tax exemption limit for senior citizens increased to Rs
2.5 lakh from Rs 2.4 lakh and eligibile age for senior citizens reduced to 60
years against 65 years. Tax exemption limit for senior citizens over 80 years at
Rs 5 lakh. No new tax exemption limits for women. No filing of tax returns if
salary is only income. This decision, which will come into effect from June 1,
2011, will reduce the compliance burden on small taxpayers, according to the
Memorandum to the Finance Bill 2011. But every person whose income exceeds the
taxable limit is required to file return of income.

25.02.2011:Another committee to scout for CMD BSNL:
Recently, the government has
constituted a new committee under Sam Pitroda to scout for state owned BSNL and
MTNL's Chairman and Managing Director (CMD). BSNL's current CMD Gopal Das, who
was given additional charge about seven months ago, is retiring next Monday. The
committee also includes Cabinet Secretary K M Chandresekhar , Principal
Secretary to the Prime Minister T K A Nair and UIDAI Chairman Nandan Nilekani as
members for selecting the top officials of the two telecom PSUs. The posts of
CMD in BSNL has been lying vacant since August 1, 2010, while that of MTNL since
January, 2010.

25.02.2011: Stay on operation of Foot Note 2 of
Schedule IA of BSNL MS RR: Chennai CAT has today dismissed
the application seeking deletion of Foot Note 2 of Schedule IA of BSNL MS RR,
paving way for issue of various promotion orders pending. It may be recalled
that AIBSNLOA was the first Association to implead in the case and the arguments
putforth by our senior counsel was appreciated by all.

23.02.2011: CHQ writes to CMD BSNL on removal of
disparity in pay scales of BSNL Executives and removal of anomaly in pay
fixation of JTO Batches 2007, 2008:We understand that
after revelations of the DPE stand by us that “DPE had earlier received the
proposal for introduction of intermediary scales particularly in respect of Oil
Sector CPSEs. The proposal was not agreed to”, the matter regarding getting
approval for revised E2 and E3 scales for JTOs and SDEs and equivalent cadres
has gathered momentum.

09.02.2011: TRAI recommends six-fold hike in price
of start-up 2G spectrum: In a
development that has huge financial implications for existing as well as new
operators, telecom regulator TRAI has recommended fixing the price for 6.2 Mhz
of pan-India start-up 2G spectrum at Rs 10,972.45 crore, more than six times the
present cost of Rs 1,658 crore. In its recommendations to the Department of
Telecom (DoT), Trai has also said that every Mhz of additional spectrum (on an
all-India basis) beyond the contracted limit of 6.2 Mhz would cost a massive Rs
4,571.87 crore. (PTI)

Government panel: 'Radiation
from mobile phones and towers poses serious health risks, including loss of
memory, lack of concentration, disturbance in the digestive system and sleep
disturbances, according to an inter-ministerial committee formed by the ministry
of communications and information technology to study the hazards posed by
mobile phones. The committee has also attributed the disappearance of
butterflies, bees, insects and sparrows vanishing from big cities to mobile
phone-related radiation.'

DoT seeks status report on MNP from Telcos:
'Last week, ET had spoken to a cross-section of consumers across the country who
had claimed their text messages for changing operators were not going through or
were eliciting terse SMS responses saying "invalid entry" or "no default
configured". Telcos, in turn, had liberally indulged in a slanging match by
levelling allegations that a section of operators were creating artificial
barriers to hold on to their high-end customers who were mulling a switch.'
